Freight forwarders and carriers are currently digesting the full details of a new list of products which the UK’s Customs and Excise officials have deemed require special permission before they can be exported.

The 28-page list is headed by a glossary which “reads more like a pharmacist’s shopping list”, according to the Handy Shipping Guide.

But also included on the list are items such as robots, and lighter-than-air vehicles.

“The authorities have long taken the line of guilty until proven innocent where shippers and their agents have supplied illegal items to overseas clients whilst at the investigative stage of a potential prosecution and, in the current climate, forwarders particularly should ensure that they not only know the character of their customers but the precise nature and uses of the goods they are exporting,” the Handy Shipping Guide advised.

passport-mapWith a strict quota of 65,000, American authorities have begun taking applications from people looking to move to the country to take up a skilled or professional job.

The country’s Citizenship and Immigration Services department (USCIS) is currently accepting such applications, but has also said it would not issue updates on its progress towards fulfilling the quota.

But it also warned that it is expecting far more applications than it can accept, and if this turns out to be the case, the petitions which are processed will be selected at random.

According to USCIS, it last had to resort to a lottery system to select which applications to proceed with in April 2008, when the full quota of applications it said it would accept was reached on the first day.

In the past two years, it has taken 235 and 73 days respectively to hit the limit, according to figures published by website Businesstoday.in.

Vivian, Global Move Specialist

Vivian Hsieh, Baggage Team Leader

Excess Baggage Company is proud to announce the appointment of our new Baggage Team Leader Vivian Hsieh. Vivan started with the company in November 2011 as a baggage sales agent and since then has impressed her peers with her hard working attitude and excellent customer feedback.

As our baggage sales team is growing, we have decided to appoint a Team Leader to assist the department manager with daily tasks. We asked a few questions from Vivian to see the direction she wants to take at her new position.

The first question we asked was what were her main goals at her new position:

  • To co-ordinate and motivate the baggage team staffs to focus on both sales and delivering high level of customer service to our customers.
  • To oversee baggage sales to make sure orders are processed accurately and timely.
  • To increase work efficiency and build strong teamwork among teams members.

The second question we asked was if she wanted to make some changes:

  • I would like to see more knowledge share among team members. The main shipping knowledge applies to most cases of unaccompanied baggage shipments. However, there are few cases that may differ. The agent that deals with the case knows better. I think it will be beneficial if the agent shares with team members about the special case so that some mistakes can possibly be prevented.
  • I think it will be good to have a quick chat and communicate with team members regularly to see how they get on with the work and to see if there is anything that requires assistance or anything that they think we can improve to work closely together to achieve company objectives.

Overall we think Vivian will do a fantastic job leading our strong baggage sales team. You can read some customer feedback about Vivian by clicking here.

Applicants for visas to visit or stay in the UK are being given more opportunities to register the biometric information required as part of their applications.

After a major software update was completed yesterday (Monday), the UK Border Agency has announced that 105 Post Office branches around the country can now take registrations of fingerprints and other biometric information which are needed for everyone visiting or staying in the country on a visa.

The Border Agency said: “The upgrade will mean that if you are unable to give a complete set of fingerprints, or provide a signature or mark you will now be able to register your details at a participating Post Office.

“The software update also means that if you cannot give a compliant facial image because you are blind, partially sighted or have long-term facial injuries you will also be able to register your details at a participating Post Office.”

Previously, anyone affected by one of these issues faced a journey to one of the UKBA’s seven public enquiry offices, which could have meant a long and difficult round trip.

Plane and Suitcase

Excess Baggage Company booked a staggering 14 953 unaccompanied baggage consignments in the year of 2012. The average size of a consignment is 3 Large suitcases with a weight of 75kg. So why is this service so popular?

Most of our clients are backpackers, expatriates and business travelers who do not have a whole lot of stuff to take with them. Our typical customer is between 18 to 35 years old and extremely price conscious.

In the light of this discovery, we have carried out an airline comparison to demonstrate how cost effective it is to use an unaccompanied baggage service versus the airlines.

In total we compared 110 different routes covering Europe, Middle East, Far East, Americas and Australasia. We used excess baggage rates from 33 major airlines and 40 countries in total.

So who are the most expensive airlines and how much do they charge for excess baggage? Based on 75kg (3 suitcases) the most expensive airlines are Emirates, Etihad and Singapore Air. All very popular airlines, so lets look at these airlines closer.

Emirates: Their excess baggage rates were used for 17 routes in total including 17 countries. Their rates range from £778 to £3170 for 75kg. The average charge for three extra bags with a weight of 25kg each comes to £1867. For the same routes our unaccompanied baggage service average cost for 75kg is £593.50, on average that is a massive £1273.50 cheaper.

Etihad: Their rates were used for 9 routes that included 11 different countries. The lowest rate for 75 kg was £1422 and highest £2368 with an average cost of £1336. On the same routes our unaccompanied excess baggage rate is £746, on average that is another massive saving of £590 per route.

Singapore Air: Their rates were also used on 9 routes that included 11 different countries. Even though their lowest rates are £379 for 75kg (short haul flights) the average cost is still £1553. Compared to this unaccompanied baggage rates are average of £588, again demonstrating a big difference of £965.

Across all airlines and countries that were used, the airlines average charges came to £754.20 based on 3 suitcases with a total weight of 75kg. In comparison, Excess Baggage Company’s unaccompanied baggage service average cost is £647.

As well as the cost, there is the convenience of using our service. All our prices used for this comparison were based on our most expensive service, which only takes 3 to 7 days door to door. This means we would collect the items from the employees home address and deliver them to their destination address. Travelling with a large number of suitcases is inconvenient and can result with a stressful journey.

If you would like to find out more details about this comparison, please get in contact with us. We can also carry out a specific comparison based on the airlines your assignees normally fly with and base it on the allowance you give to your employees.

There are many reasons we have chosen Canada as our destination of the month, but mainly because of its immense popularity. According to The Guardian website, Canada was the 3rd most popular destination for British expats in 2009 – 2010 period. There was a staggering 14, 000 British leaving the homeland for Canada. More about the popular destinations click here.

This time we have decided to do our airline comparison a bit different. The last times we based the prices on taking an extra 25kg’s for a round trip. This time we are going to concentrate on people leaving the UK permanently with more than just one extra suitcase to take.

Looking at our own data of how much our baggage shipping customers tend to take, we have decided to base it on five large suitcases/boxes. This time we have looked at three major airlines flying to Canada from Heathrow. The prices are based flying economy class.

As you can see one airline is actually cheaper than our service, however our prices are based on 26kg each suitcase. You also have the convenience of not having to get your suitcases to/from the airport as our service includes a collection and delivery service.

It is also important to note that we have based our own prices on sending the goods to Vancouver, we have chosen this as Vancouver was recently named as the best city in Canada to live in according to the Mercer report.

We also offer a sea freight service, which we have provided a price comparison below as some customers do not need their excess baggage immediately on arrival.

Don’t forget that with sea freight our service allows you to pack up to 35kg into each suitcase/box as the price is determined on the size rather than the weight.

As you can see the airline excess baggage charges vary from carrier to carrier. It is important to check this with your airline immediately before booking to see if you can save by using the Excess Baggage Company services.

We also carry out full household goods removals and for more information on this service please visit Excess International Website

At Excess Baggage Company we always try to keep you informed of the newest customs regulations and rules. Today we have been informed by our local agents in New Zealand about the new regulations that may affect you.

Up to now, where a returning New Zealand resident arrived after their shipment did, or goods were imported by a foreign national whose residence status was not finalised, a deposit was paid to New Zealand Customs to the value of the duty and tax which would apply as if no concession existed for that importer. The importer was then able to apply to have that deposit refunded once they arrived or received residency status (assuming that they fulfilled the normal other criteria for duty and tax free importation).

This regulation is about to change and is put in effect on 1st of December. So what is changing?

If the importer of the goods does not, at the time of importation of the goods, hold a document authorising permanent residence in New Zealand, or they have not arrived in New Zealand at the time of importation of the goods then the goods do not qualify for concessionary entry.

If the concession conditions cannot be met then the goods must be entered on an import entry and duty and/or GST is required to be paid.  This revenue is not refundable even if at a later stage the importer obtains a qualifying visa, as at the time of importation they did not qualify for the concession and therefore the revenue was not paid in error.

So what does that mean to you?

You must be in New Zealand when your goods arrive, or duty and/or GST will be charged on your shipment, even if you meet the other criteria for duty & tax free entry of your goods.   No concession will be made if you arrive after your goods do, and you will not have the right to reclaim any duty or tax paid at the time of entry of your goods.

For more details, contact one of our representatives on 0800 5244 4822 or +44 (0) 20 8324 2088.
